An article comprising a substrate having thereon an alloy coating consisting essentially of, in atomic percent, about 0.3 to about 1% W, about 0.31 to about 0.8% C, about 0.06 to about 0.8% B, about 0.005 to about 0.02% Th, and about 1 to about 10% of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Zr and Hf, balance Ir.
