where each R1 is independently -alkyl-NR23+, -alkyl-NR22, -aryl-NR23+, -alkyl-CO2−, -aryl-CO2−, -alkyl-CO2H, -alkyl-CO2R6, -alkyl-CO2R7, —OR7, -amino acid-NH2, -amino acid-NH3+, -phosphorylated amino acid-NH3+, polyethylene glycol, dextran, H, alkyl, aryl, -alkyl-O—PO2-O—alkyl-NR23+,

wherein R′ is alkyl-O, alkyl, or aryl;
