1. A computer-implemented method comprising:
detecting a delete event for a first content item at a first location on a local file system of a client device, wherein the first location on the local file system is managed by a content management system, wherein the first content item is deleted from the first location on the local file system;
determining the first content item is at a second location on the local file system;
determining whether the delete event for the first content item is associated with an add event for the first content item when the first content item has been determined to be at the second location; and
based on having determined that the delete event is associated with the add event on the local file system:
waiting for the add event to be processed on the local file system; and
updating a local tree data structure to represent a state of the local file system, after the add event is processed, by processing for the local tree data structure the delete event for the first content item at the first location with the add event for the first content item at the second location in a unitary update to the local tree data structure, wherein the local tree data structure represents the state of the local file system.
