1. A method for producing a haloalkane sulfonic acid, comprising the steps of:
a) contacting sulfur trioxide (SO3—), a haloalkane, and compound which is able to initialize the reaction between sulfur trioxide (SO3) and haloalkane with each other in the presence of a solvent,
wherein at least one of:
i) said solvent is a superacid; and
ii) the combination of said solvent with one or more of sulfur trioxide (SO3) and the haloalkane sulfonic acid gives rise to a superacid; and
wherein the solvent is not H2SO4.
