1. A cyanine compound, wherein the compound is of Formula 4a or 4b:

or a tautomer thereof, or a salt thereof,
wherein:
each m is independently 2 to 6;
X is O, S, or NR20,
wherein R20 is selected from hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted alkynyl, optionally substituted aryl, and optionally substituted heteroaryl;
R6 is selected from optionally substituted alkyl, halogen, carboxy, optionally substituted alkoxy, optionally substituted aryloxy, thiol, optionally substituted alkylthiol, optionally substituted arylthiol, azido, nitro, nitroso, cyano, amino, OH, a phosphonyl, a sulfonyl, a carbonyl, a boronyl, optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted heteroaryl, optionally substituted phenyl, optionally substituted pyridyl, optionally substituted thiophenyl, and optionally substituted biphenyl; and
each HBG is selected from —OH, —NH2, —NHCOCH3, —NHSOCH3, —NHSO2CH2F, —NHSO2CHF2, and —NHSO2CF3.
