1. A fault detection and reporting method comprising:
in response to a detection circuit detecting a fault condition on an input data line that is coupled to a transceiver, the input data line causing a state change in a fault pin, performing steps comprising:
interrupting a transmission loop internal to the transceiver;
using the state change to generate a fault detection code; and
shifting the fault detection code to at least one of the transceiver output or the fault pin.
