determining, by a system comprising a processor, respective communication conditions or respective signal characteristics associated with respective devices in a communication network, wherein the respective communication conditions comprise a communication condition of a device associated with a base station of the communication network, and wherein the communication condition is determined based on a received signal strength indicator value, a received signal received power value, a received signal received quality value, a channel quality indicator, a signal to interference and noise ratio value, or a timing advance value associated with the device;
distinguishing, by the system, the device from other devices of the respective devices based on a difference between a first portion of the respective communication conditions or respective signal characteristics associated with the device and a second portion of the respective communication conditions or respective signal characteristics associated with the other devices; and
classifying, by the system, the device as an excessive signaling device based on device type information associated with the device and a number of control signals determined to be received from the device by the base station.
